German Ministries of Economic Affairs & Energy and Transport have recently selected 62 industry-scale projects involved in hydrogen production. These projects will be collectively funded by the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI). Together, these projects represent different aspects of the hydrogen market’s value chain. These projects were selected by the German government from over 230 project proposals. The European Commission is expected to approve the chosen projects under the law for state aid later this year.

Peter Altmaier, Federal Minister of Economic Affairs & Energy said, “We want to become number 1 in the world in hydrogen technologies. We are providing over 8 billion euros in federal and state funds for the 62 German projects selected today, and with the projects, we cover the entire value chain – from hydrogen generation and transport to industrial applications.”

Andreas Scheuer, Federal Minister for Transport said, “We are making Germany a hydrogen country. In doing so, we are rethinking mobility, European and holistic – from the energy system and drive technologies to the fuelling infrastructure. In order to cover all areas of mobility with zero-emission solutions, we need technology openness. That is why we also support fuel cell technology as well as vehicle and component manufacturers, so as not to miss the boat internationally.”

The €8 million fund is a mix of contributions from federal and state reserves. €4.4 billion will be provided by the Ministry of Economic Affairs & Energy, €1.4 billion will be issued by the Ministry of Transport and the states will contribute the remaining amount of €2.2 billion to the projects. In addition to this, the move will trigger investments of up to €33 billion with over €20 billion coming from private investors.

Among the finalists, 50 projects were selected by the Ministry of Economic Affairs & Energy. These projects include plants of a hydrogen production capacity of up to 2GW using electrolysis. Germany has set itself a target of generating up to 5GW green hydrogen by the end of this decade, 40% of which will be served by these 50 projects. The remaining projects are being funded by the Ministry of Transport. These 12 projects encompass various aspects of the sustainable transport industry such as fuel-cell-powered cars, trucks, municipal vehicles and the development of a pan-German refueling infrastructure catering exclusively to hydrogen.
