Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 Opens for Reservations, Offers 80% Charge in 18 Minutes

Hyundai Austria offers 150 slots for reserving its newest battery electric vehicle, slated to begin delivery by mid-2021

Yesterday morning, Hyundai Austria opened reservations for the IONIQ 5. The reservation deposit was listed at a formidable €1,000. However, 80 of the 150 slots available were booked within hours. The excitement around the vehicle is palpable thanks to an array of impressive features. According to information leaked by Korean car websites, IONIQ 5’s 800-volt system will allow passengers to charge up to 80% of the battery in less than 20 minutes. Other interesting features include a solar panelled roof and a dual-motor version with ~230 kW power and 0-100 km/h in  5.1 seconds.

IONIQ 5’s impressive charging speed can be credited to Hyundai’s new E-GMP platform. Electric vehicles being rolled out under Hyundai, Kia and Genesis over the coming years will also be built on this platform. Combined with high energy efficiency, IONIQ 5’s superfast charging capacity will endow it with the highest range recovery speed among all the electric vehicles in the market, surpassing Porsche’s Taycan and Tesla’s Model 3.

Even though IONIQ 5’s usable capacity is 57 kWH, its DC charging performance will allow it to add over 2 hours of highway driving in just about 15 minutes. This also opens up EV adoption among those who do not have access to a daily plug nearby. With a 15-minute charge once a week, the IONIQ 5 is expected to handle typical commuting distances in most European and Asian conditions. The new charging requirement also puts it at par with petrol/diesel cars, refuting old claims that EVs take longer to refill. Hyundai has pushed the limits of  DC charging performance with its latest offering, and other brands are expected to rise to the challenge.

Sources indicate that the IONIQ 5 will look similar to Hyundai’s “Concept 45”. Slightly shorter than the Tesla Model 3 (4694 mm) and just a smidge longer than the Volkswagen ID.4 (4584 mm), it will lie in the sweet spot of most EV vehicle formats being followed in Europe.
