Southeast European renewables major CWP Global has signed an MoU with Mauritania to develop a 30GW hydrogen Power-to-X project to be built in a desert site across 8,500 kilometres

CWP Global has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Mauritian government to build a Power-to-X project with an electrolysis capacity of 30GW. The green hydrogen project will cost the partners €32 billion and will be the largest of its kind in the world. The project, named AMAN will be built on a desert site measuring 8,500 kilometres. AMAN is expected to have transformative effect on the Mauritian economy by generating jobs, providing access to inexpensive electricity and water and boost export trade in utilities.
Abdessalam Saleh, Minister of Petroleum, Mines and Energy of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania said: “The Government of Mauritania has put the exploitation of its immense renewable resources as a top priority in line with the commitment of his excellency the President of the Republic to promote accelerated, sustainable, and equitable economic growth for all the people of Mauritania. The Government of Mauritania is grateful to CWP and to its CEO Mr. Mark Crandall for his trust and express its unwavering commitment to this monumental endeavour.”

The Power-to-x project will produce blue hydrogen by integrating a carbon capture and storage facility to the plant. Mauritania has already started working on developing a roadmap for its emerging hydrogen industry. Along with Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad it is part of the G5 Sahel, a coalition of African nations exploring sustainable energy alternatives for their economies.
